So while many smiling faces and giddy torsos were witnessed around the world as the new iPhones went on sale Friday, some people were left grim.

At the Pasadena, Calif., Apple store, there was more than the average level of commotion.

A businessman had allegedly hired around 100 homeless people to stand in line on his behalf. Their remit was to get vouchers for two iPhones each. For this they say they were promised $20 for each phone they could secure. (Apple imposes a two-phone limit.)

However, as Rich DeMuro of KTLA-TV reports, some claim they didn't get their money.

• "deals effectively with pressure; remains optimistic and persistent, even under adversity,"
• "complies with established control systems and rules," and

The NSA surveillance scandal is no joke, of course. It threatens both the Constitution and, possibly, the agency's effectiveness at fighting terrorism. NASA's LADEE lunar probe takes off from Virginia aboard a Minotaur V rocket.

There's a bizarre glow on the moon and scientists have launched a probe to figure out what it is.

A Minotaur V rocket roared into the skies above Virginia late Friday carrying the super sleuth robot, NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), which will examine the moon's infinitesimal atmosphere and dust.

The $280 million mission began with a textbook launch, visible to millions along the East Coast, as the probe was carried aloft at 11:27 PM EDT from Pad 0B at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia.

It marks the first use of Wallops Island for a moonshot, as well as the debut mission for Orbital Sciences' Minotaur V booster.

Apple's next iPhone is headed to China Mobile and its more than 740 million subscribers, according to a new report.

Citing sources, The Wall Street Journal says Apple plans to sell the upcoming, and highly-rumored low-cost iPhone model on the carrier, which does not currently offer Apple's mobile phone.

The report comes on the heels of others in recent weeks, claiming Apple and the carrier have been involved in business discussions.

An enormous feature in the northern Pacific, Tamu Massif has been confirmed as the largest single volcano on Earth.

Scientists have discovered a staggering colossus that once spewed fire but now slumbers deep in the Pacific Ocean. Sadly it's not Godzilla, but it is a volcano with a footprint comparable to Olympus Mons on Mars, the largest volcano in the solar system.

Covering an area of 120,000 square miles, which makes it about the size of New Mexico or the British Isles, the formation dubbed Tamu Massif is one of the biggest ever found, according to a study led by University of Houston professor William Sager.

"We show that the Tamu Massif is a single, immense volcano, constructed from massive lava flows that emanated from the volcano center to form a broad, shield-like shape," Sager and colleagues write in Nature Geoscience (PDF).

Zeus takes its place in the pantheon of 3D printers.

We're already used to 2D copiers and printers. Slip a piece of paper in, push a button, and a copy comes out. Now, that same sort of capability is coming to the 3D world with the AIO Robotics Zeus all-in-one 3D scanner, copier, and printer on Kickstarter.

The process is fairly simple. You place an object inside Zeus, the machine scans it, and then creates a copy. You can also load your own 3D files for printing.There is a one-touch automatic-copy button if you want the machine to just go to town. All of this is controlled through a friendly 7-inch touch-screen interface.

No, not at all; the maximum volume level of any amp is determined not by how far you turn the knob, but by the amp or receiver's power output.
